Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan Road Trip Itineraries by Car 2026

2026-04-05By Ride N Repair

Last Updated: April 2026

India is built for road trips. You can start in a palm-lined Kerala village, finish in a Rajasthani fort town, and in between cross coasts, hills, deserts and history. A well-planned 5 or 6-day car itinerary packs the memorable parts without turning the trip into a motorway marathon. This guide lays out three classic Indian road trips, Kerala backwaters, Goa with Gokarna and Hampi, and Rajasthan's Jaipur-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer triangle, with distances, must-stop places, fuel strategy, where to book doorstep service before departure, and regional road-condition notes.

All three itineraries have been ridden and driven by the Ride N Repair customer community over the past year. Pick one, book a pre-trip inspection, and you are 80 percent of the way to a great trip.

Pre-Departure: Book a Doorstep Car Service

All three itineraries involve 400-850 km of varied terrain, ghats, coastal humidity, desert heat, high dust. Your car should be in top shape before departure. A doorstep 150-point inspection by Ride N Repair covers fluids, brakes, tyres, belts, hoses, battery, AC cooling, lights and electricals, everything a long drive stress-tests. The inspection takes 45-60 minutes at your home or office and costs a small fraction of one roadside recovery.

Book a pre-trip 150-point doorstep inspection starting at Rs. 799, or browse our full service menu. We cover Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Jaipur and 26 other cities. You can also browse car service near me for workshop alternatives.

Car Rental Tips

If you are flying in and renting, use these rules:

  • Book through Zoomcar, Revv, Myles or Drivezy. Avoid unverified local agencies.
  • Take pre-trip photos of every panel, bumper, alloy and interior on pickup.
  • Confirm fuel policy, same-to-same is fairest. Full-to-empty penalises you.
  • Verify insurance covers inter-state travel, some policies restrict it.
  • Keep the 24x7 support number saved. Rental firms often have partner workshops in tourist cities.
  • Test AC, wipers, horn, lights and brakes in the first 5 kilometres before leaving the city.
  • For self-drive, an SUV or crossover (Creta, Seltos, Brezza) handles ghats and ruined stretches better than a sedan.

Fuel Planning Across All Three Itineraries

ItineraryEst. Fuel NeededLongest Gap Between PumpsFuel Cost (Rs.)
Kerala 400 km~30 L25-30 km~3,000-3,300
Goa-Hampi 750 km~60 L80 km (near Hampi)~6,000-6,600
Rajasthan 850 km~65 L100 km (near Jaisalmer)~6,500-7,150

Never drop below a quarter-tank. Top up at every major town, not every rural pump.

Monsoon and Off-Season Notes

These itineraries shine in specific windows, but you can do them off-season with adjustments.

Kerala off-season (June-September)

Monsoon transforms Kerala into a lush green paradise but adds risks. Ghats between Thekkady and Munnar flood periodically, houseboats run at reduced schedules, and some trails close. Ayurveda tourism peaks during monsoon because humidity aids treatments.

Goa off-season (June-September)

Shack beaches close, many restaurants shut down, and the sea is rough. Interior Goa (Old Goa, spice plantations) remains accessible. Hampi becomes more picturesque with the Tungabhadra in full flow, but overnight Hampi-Goa drives get slow.

Rajasthan off-season (April-September)

Temperatures cross 45 C, desert tourism drops sharply. Hotels offer 40-60 percent discounts. Drive only early mornings and evenings, AC on max throughout. Many desert camps shut between May-August.

Post-Trip Car Care

Road trip returns often show delayed wear symptoms. Within 48 hours of returning, check:

  • Engine oil level and condition. Top up if below MAX.
  • Brake pad thickness. Ghat driving accelerates wear.
  • Tyre condition. Look for new cuts, stones embedded in tread, uneven wear.
  • Undercarriage wash. Remove road salt, mud, coastal humidity residue.
  • AC cooling performance. Sustained use stresses compressor.
  • Any warning light. Scan the OBD for stored codes.

Book a post-trip health check if the odometer added 1,500 km+. A 30-minute inspection catches silent wear that would otherwise fail weeks later in city driving.

Driving Style Tips for Each Region

Kerala Driving Style

  • Expect slow speeds, narrow roads with dense ribbon-development villages.
  • Honk politely at blind curves in ghats, Kerala drivers honk reflexively.
  • Give way to state transport buses, they drive assertively.
  • Watch for motorcycles, scooters and stray dogs everywhere.
  • Parking is tight in towns, use hotel parking whenever possible.

Goa-Karnataka Driving Style

  • Goan roads have narrow shoulders, avoid overtaking on curves.
  • Roundabouts are common in Goa, give way to traffic on your right.
  • Karnataka highways between Goa-Hampi have steady truck traffic.
  • Cattle and dogs are a constant on rural sections.
  • Police sobriety checks common near Goa beaches after 10 pm.

Rajasthan Driving Style

  • Rajasthan highways are fast and open, but have high-speed trucks.
  • Avoid overtaking on single-lane stretches near Jaisalmer.
  • Stray camels and cattle near desert roads, especially dawn and dusk.
  • Sandstorms in summer, pull over and wait them out.
  • Fuel stops become sparse after Jodhpur, top up in every major town.

Typical Day Schedule on Each Itinerary

Experienced road-trippers follow similar daily rhythms. Use these as templates:

TimeActivity
5:30 amWake up, light stretching
6:00 amBreakfast and car check
6:45 amDepart (early start beats traffic and heat)
9:00 amFirst stop, 15 min stretch + hydrate
11:30 amSecond stop, snack + fuel if needed
1:00 pmLunch, 45-60 min break
3:00 pmAfternoon driving (AC on)
4:30 pmThird stop, tea and stretch
5:30-6:00 pmArrive destination, check in
6:30 pmLocal sightseeing or sunset point
8:00 pmDinner
10:00 pmSleep, plan next day

Children and Senior-Citizen Considerations

If your road trip includes kids or older parents, adjust the plan:

  • Cap daily driving at 250-300 km to avoid fatigue.
  • Add 2-3 extra rest breaks per day.
  • Carry motion-sickness medication, ORS, snacks and water always accessible.
  • Avoid extremely winding ghats (Thekkady-Munnar, Kodaikanal) with kids below 5 years.
  • Book ground-floor hotel rooms for seniors to avoid stair climbs.
  • Keep a small cooler box for medications that need refrigeration.
  • Confirm nearest hospital locations for each overnight stop.

Final Word

India's road trips work best when you respect the distances, plan the fuel, pre-book the popular stays, and start the car trip with a car that is road-ready. Kerala gives you water, Goa-Hampi gives you history, Rajasthan gives you desert and royalty, and all three give you stories you will tell for years. Book the doorstep inspection, pack the kit, start early, and let the Indian highway do what it does best.
